           OBESITY IS A SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEM!



Studies have shown that most adults and children do not see obesity as a health problem. Many relate their weight to athletic performance, and social acceptance.

Fact: Over 25% of worldwide cancer cases are due to being overweight.

Fact: Obesity is the second largest killer in the USA after cigarettes.

Fact: An obese person’s life is shortened by 9 years on average.

Fact: Obesity costs approximately $100 billion per year due to medical bills, sickness          benefits and costs to employers.

Fact: Over 300,000 deaths a year in the USA are linked to obesity related diseases.

Fact: Almost 20% of teenagers have the first sign of heart disease in the form of blocked coronary arteries.

Fact: Over 15% of children between 6 and 19 years old are now classified as obese and risk developing potentially fatal diseases.

Fact: It is predicted that in the next 10-15 years, Obesity will surpass smoking as the #1 cause of preventable deaths in the USA and UK.

Fact: If you are morbidly obese, you only have a 1 in 7 chance of achieving normal life expectancy.

Fact: The number of adolescents suffering from obesity has more than tripled in the last 20 years.

When neither parent is obese, there is a 20% chance of the child being obese.

When one parent is obese, there is a 40% chance of the child being obese.

When both parents are obese, there is 80% chance of the child being obese.

However, only 20% to 40% of over weight cases are caused by genetics.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CAUSE OF OBESITY?
Too much intake and not enough output = Poor diet and lack of physical activity. We as parents can have a large amount of influence over these factors. It is our responsibility to make lifestyle changes to reduce the causes of obesity.
